Jesus Revolution Movie

Jesus Revolution is a 2023 American Christian drama film based on the autobiographical book of the same name co-written by Greg Laurie, the film follows the teenage Laurie (Joel Courtney), Christian hippie Lonnie Frisbee (Jonathan Roumie), and pastor Chuck Smith (Kelsey Grammer) as they take part in the Jesus movement in California during the late 1960s.

In the 1970s, Greg Laurie and a sea of young people descend on sunny Southern California to redefine truth through all means of liberation. Inadvertently, Laurie meets a charismatic street preacher and a pastor who open the doors to a church to a stream of wandering youth. What unfolds is a counterculture movement that becomes the greatest spiritual awakening in American history.

Jesus Revolution covers a fascinating period of American history – the hippie movement and its associated fallout within the Christian community and how the "Jesus movement" started. It was an evangelical Protestant movement that began on the West Coast of the United States in the late 1960s and early 1970s and primarily spread throughout North America, Europe, Central America, Australia and New Zealand, before it subsided in the late 1980s. It spawned the formation of several denominations and organizations, as well as the creation of youth groups for young worshippers. It also influenced the evolution of the modern-day Christian left and Christian right. Members of the movement were called "Jesus people" or "Jesus freaks". The music associated with the Jesus Movement, dubbed "Jesus music," eventually evolved into the contemporary Christian music industry. Remember the DC Talk hit from 1995?

I saw this movie when it first came out. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but I enjoyed it (maybe because I'm old enough to have lived through it 😉). If you're old enough to remember the 1960s and '70s, you'll find Jesus Revolution to be a walk down memory lane. Now you can watch it for free...

Anne Wilson wrote and sang the feature track for Jesus Revolution, "Living Water". The music video spotlights key clips from the film that help convey the power behind reconciliation and the peace found while surrendering to your faith.
