Eric Church Commencement Speech

On May 9, 2026 Country star Eric Church delivered a moving commencement speech for the graduating class of UNC Chapel Hill, structured around the 6 strings of a guitar. The surprisingly powerful commencement speech centered on faith, family, marriage, ambition, community, and personal growth went viral on the internet.

Using the six strings of a guitar as a metaphor for life’s six pillars, Church gave graduates a message many say is missing from college campuses today. “Six strings. When all six are in tune, the chords they make can stop a conversation cold, carry a broken person through the worst night of their life, or make a room full of strangers feel for three minutes like they’ve known each other forever,” Church said while strumming his guitar onstage. “But if even one is off, the whole chord unravels. Not gradually, not politely. The moment you strike it, you know.”

Church warned students not to neglect their faith “when you’re whole,” called marriage the second most important decision in life, and encouraged graduates to “tune” their lives before things fall apart. He concluded by noting the six strings will be out of tune at times in life, which is not “failure” or “weakness” but an “inevitable” part of life.

“The difference between a life that sounds like music and a life that sounds like noise is whether you stop and listen — whether you’re honest enough to hear which string has drifted out of tune and humble enough to make the adjustment instead of just turning up the volume and hoping nobody notices,” Church said.

“Take your six strings, make it worth something worth hearing and play your song,” he said to a roar from the crowd.
